MEMENTO: A Project by Taavet Jansen and Tambet Tuisk Exploring the Possibilities of Performance in Physical and Virtual Space.

Memento is a collaborative project by Taavet Jansen and Tambet Tuisk that explores new ways of creating theatrical performance where the audience is split between those physically present and those participating online. The project’s core features an improvisation method developed by Tambet Tuisk, which is based on the psychological concept of flow. This method enables the actors—drama students from the UT Viljandi Cultural Academy—to spontaneously build entire performances rooted in their own past, present, and dreams.

The performances are designed to be highly interactive. The online viewers collectively influence the performance's environment. This mechanism allows the virtual audience to actively shape the theatrical atmosphere without dictating the actors' actions. This approach successfully merges the two distinct spaces (physical and virtual) into a cohesive and responsive performance experience.

The work premiered in February 2023, following the second iteration in 2005.

“Held in Human II: Rose in Your Brain” shows how technology can be designed, when the objective is not progress or conquest, but technology’s imaginative and empathetic use for artistic ends. And the result? Well, perhaps the kind of mixed reality we, as humanity, truly need.
